How to Calculate Median

The video below shows how to calculate the Median. There are many Math Worksheets to help you calculate the Median and mode as well as practice how to calculate the Median and mode. While the Median is different from the Mean and the mode, calculating the Median may even be easier than calculating the Mean. Watch the video below to find out how to calculate the Median.

We have already discussed the definition of the Median. To recap what the Median is, the Median is defined as follows.

The video shows how to find the median systematically. You can even view the method of finding the median shown as a formula for finding the median of a string of numbers.

Definition of Median

What is the definition of the Median?

Today we are going to define the definition of the Median in math. The Median is defined as the middle value in a distribution. Let’s look at an example of how to find a Median.

Median

Suppose we have 5 numbers, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Definition of Median

Now with any string of numbers, you must first make sure that it’s in either increasing order or decreasing order to find the Median. In another word, we need the numbers to be 1 2 3 4 5 or 5 4 3 2 1 and not 3 5 1 4 2 or any other combinations.

Definition of median

Then in order to find the Median, you need to identify the middle value. In this example, there are five numbers and three stands in the middle. Therefore, three is the Median of this number distribution.

Definition of median

Now, if you have an even set of numbers, such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 instead of just one to five. Then the Median lies between 3 and 4.

Median calculation

For a even number of distribution. Arrange the numbers in an ascending order or descending order. Take the two most middle numbers, in this case 3 and 4. Then take The Average of them. The Median in this example is then 3 + 4 divided by 2 or 3.5.

How to find median

That’s it. Now you can find the Median of any string of numbers, odd or even.

Median

A median is different from a Mean, an average or a mode. Averages and median are important in statistics and probability, a branch of math.

What is the median?

The median is the middle number in a series of numbers stated in order from least to greatest. An average and a median should not be the same number. However, in some cases, The Average is the same as the median as illustrated below.

Example of the median and The Average
Example 1

Consider 3, 5 and 7.

  • The Average of 3, 5 and 7 is 5.
  • The median of the three numbers is 5.
Example 2

Consider 3, 5, 7, 9, 11.

  • The Average of the above 5 numbers is 17.5.
  • The median of the three numbers is 7.
How to Calculate Median?

The median often goes hand in hand with the Mean and mode in Mean Median Mode. However, the median is probably the easiest of the three to calculate. To find the median of a series of numbers, there is really no need to calculate median or anything. Just look for the middle number in the series.
