Let's subtract a big number this time. Let's subtract 38 from 413. Remember that the first step of easy subtraction is to write the numbers in columns.

Working from the right hand column to the left, the most right hand column is three minus eight. Since three is less than 8, we need to borrow from the middle column. Borrowing one from the middle column leaves the middle column with zero and adds 10 to the right column.

The right hand column becomes 13 minus 8 giving 5. This concludes the subtraction of the right hand column so we move to the middle column. The middle column, after losing one to the right column, becomes zero minus 3. Again, zero is less than three so we borrow from the left column.

The middle column becomes 10 minus 3 which is 7. That leaves the first column as 3 giving the final solution to the subtraction problem of 375. That's it. You can use this method to solve any subtraction problems.
