Definition of Fractions

The fraction a/b where a is the numerator and b is the denominator means a is being divided by b. The denominator of a fraction can never be zero because any numbers divided by zero is undefined mathematically.

If the numerator is greater than the denominator, the fraction is an improper fraction. When the number can be represented as a whole number and a fraction, then it is called a mixed number. An example of a mixed number is 8 ¼ or 34 ¾.
