Question: I need help on a math problem?

We’re doing worksheets in my math class and we’ve been working on the same ones all week and I still can’t get the answer to these two! Help?
The two questions are:
1. The Podunk Village fire truck has two hoses. The length of hose #1 is 20 ft less than 4 times the length of hose #2. The combined length of the two hoses is 380 ft. Find the length of the longer hose. The answer is either 300 ft or 285 ft.

2. A triangular sail has two sides the same length. The third side is 9 ft shorter than either of the equal sides. The perimeter of the sail is 63 ft. How long is the shortest side? The answer is either 13 ft or 15 ft.

Thanks!

Answer: 1. The Podunk Village fire truck has two hoses.
The length of hose #1 is 20 ft less than 4 times the length of hose #2. The combined length of the two hoses is 380 ft. Find the length of the longer hose. The answer is either 300 ft or 285 ft.
hose 1 = 4x-20
hose 2 =x
5x-20=380
5x=400
x=80
4x-20=300 feet
