Math Worksheets To Work On

Question: does this sound like a proper peice of work to set some children?
i think this is ridiculous, some children in the class i help out in got after school detentions for not doing work which involved this:
It was a maths worksheet, and it had various sums on such as 100+350 and they had to answer the question then find the number on a word search at the bottom of the page. Various children have got after school detentions and letters home for only answering like one of the questions.
Do you think this sounds like a proper piece of work or just a fun thing?
please answer
thanks
It was set for some year 8 children (12 year olds) because there wasent a proper teacher just a supply
Answer: This is a common type of homework; my son got a lot of these in elementary school. It doesn’t sound too hard, and there’s no reason the kids couldn’t do it all. I think they include the word search because for some kids it makes math more fun. There’s nothing inappropriate about this type of homework.
On the other hand, in my opinion, detention is for misbehavior, not for incomplete homework. Incomplete homework should result in a zero homework grade, not a detention, and the parents should be notified that the child isn’t completing the homework assignment.
Wow, that sounds like third or fourth grade work! There’s no reason 12-year-olds shouldn’t be able to do it easily. Their job is to do the assigned work, regardless of whether or not it seems like “silly” work that was given by a substitute. But detention is the wrong consequence.
