Addition worksheet example
Let us suppose you want to add small numbers first. Let’s add 3 and 5 together. And, instead of writing 3 plus 5 on one line, we are going to get in the habit of writing it vertically as follows. But, we are also going to put the bigger number on top and the smaller one at the bottom.

Now, we know that 3 and 5 makes 8. Now, let’s add 2 digit numbers, say 17 and 6. Again writing the two numbers vertically, putting the larger number on top. Another thing we are going to do is separate each number into column. So, if there if one number, it stands on the right hand column. We have:

Now, the way to add numbers that have more than one column (i.e.. more than one digit) is to start adding the right hand column as if the numbers in that column are one digit numbers and work your way from the right hand column to the left. In this case we are going to add 7 and 6 first. We know that 7 plus 6 makes 13.

But, since 13 is a two digit number, we must separate 13 into two columns, 3 remains in the right column and 1 is moved to the left column. Now we have finished addition the right hand column, it is time to add the left hand column. On the left hand column, we have 1 (from 17) and 1 (from 13), making it 2. So, 17 plus 6 is 23.
