Math Worksheets Input Output

Question: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

I really need help with this math problem. It’s really late at night and it’s due tomorrow, and I’ve been working on it for like the past hour. The worksheet is called Writing Equations from Patterns, and I need to get the equation for this set of input/output pairs.

X- 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Y- 3, 12/5, 9/5, 6/5, 3/5, 0
Just in the whole y=whatever form. Some of my other answers have been -3x-4=y, 4x+2=y, etc

Answer: Notice that x increases by 1 each time.

Let’s look at the first two pairs (0, 3) and (1, 12/5).

We know that the formula is going to be something like y = mx + b

For x = 0, we have y = mx + b = mx + b = m*0 + b = b = 3, so we know that b = 3.

Plugging in that b = 3, we can go on to x = 1:

For x = 1, we have y = mx + b = m(1) + 3 = m + 3 = 12/5

So we need to solve m + 3 = 12/5:

m + 3 = 12/5

Subtract 3 from both sides to solve for m:

m + 3 – 3 = 12/5 – 3
m = 12/5 – 3
m = 12/5 – 15/5
m = -3/5

Let’s see if this works for x = 2, 3, 4, and 5

y = (-3/5)x + 3

For x = 2:

y = (-3/5)(2) + 3
y = -6/5 + 3
y = -6/5 + 15/5
y = 9/5

Yep, that one checks out

For x = 3:

y = (-3/5)(3) + 3
y = -9/5 + 15/5
y = 6/5

Yep, that one checks out

For x = 4:

y = (-3/5)(4) + 3
y = -12/5 + 15/5
y = 3/5

Yep, that one checks out

For x = 5

y = (-3/5)(5) + 3
y = -15/5 + 3
y = -3 + 3
y = 0

Yep, that one checks out.

So our answer is:

y = (-3/5)x + 3
