Math Worksheets Polygons

Question: need help with math!?

ok so were reveiwing on how to find the area of shapes and theres a weird on area.

my school sucks because my teacher dont teach us! i Mean seriously! they just give us worksheets, expect us to know what they Mean, and yell at us when we get it wrong!

anyways this is the quiestion:

Grahph the polygon with the given vertices. Then find the area of the polygon.
(2,3)(5,7)(10,3)

any idea wut the answer is or what it even means?!?
our teacher gets annoyed and stuff when we ask her for help NO idea why but if you knew then youd understand. i tried to tell her i didnt understand and no 1 else did and she just kept going and ignored my friend. gosh! i only need to know that question, its not all my homework.
i did graph it but it didnt really seem to make sense
thank you so much Kattie!

Answer: First of all, your polygon has three vertices and that makes it a triangle and the area of a triangle is:
1/2 base * height

Look at the y-coordinates of your three vertices. The first and third vertices have y-coordinates of 3 while the second has a y-coordinate of 7. The first and third vertices makes up your base and the second is at the top.

How wide is the base? What is the distance between the first and third vertices –> the first has an x coordinate of 2 and the third has an x coordinate of 10; therefore the base is 10 – 2 or 8 units long.

The height could be figured out a number of cleaver ways by using distance formulas and figuring out the angles but really, who cares. We know that the base has a y coordinate of 3 and the top of our Triangle has a y coordinate of 7; therefore the height is 7 – 3 or 4 units.

This makes the area of our Triangle:
1/2 (8 * 4) = 1/2 (32) = 16

No graph paper needed. Don’t get all bothered by a problem that sounds hard just stick with what you know.
